Use the 'text to speech' program and
Audacity to create a short sound clip

MORBIUS
It all started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. We come from Blarg, a
planet in the vicinity of Sirius.

KLAATU
You cannot be Sirius.

MORBIUS
I am. Deadly Sirius.

KLAATU
That’s just our little joke.

MORBIUS
Anyway, my people decided to send some scientists out around the universe to
find out about other life-forms. ‘The truth is out there’ – that’s what they used to say.
I was one of those scientists and I was sent here. My job is to learn about Earth and
your customs.

KLAATU
And then – thanks to the professor here – we crashed. And we haven’t got any fuel
to get home again.

Copy and paste the above script into the

using 2 different voices then in Audacity
modify the voices to sound like aliens

Understand: How a sound project can be made up of many different part.

How: Using Audacity how to add sounds in appropriate places.

Be able to: Take appropriate sounds and make a comprehensive story to listen to.

List to the Beowulf clip . What are the different sound you can hear?

Create a folder in you ICT folder call Beowulf.

To import a sound into Audacity:
  1. Open Audacity.
  2. From the main menu, select File, Import, and then Audio.
The audio selection window is displayed.
  3. Choose the sound files from your computer, and then click on Open.
A new track is added to your project at the very bottom of the project window

Mute all the sound clips except the narrator clips.
Start by using the selection tool to copy and paste the narration parts together.
Listen to the  Beowulf clip and Identify the first sound effect and unmute it.
Use the  timeshift tool to slide the sound clip to the correct position on the time
line.
Continue to listen to the Beowulf clip and identify the next sound effect.
Unmute it. Use the timeshift tool to slide the sound clip to the correct position
on the time
line.
Repeat this process till you have reconstructed the Beowulf clip.

Watch as I demonstrate how to
  • Adding a sound clip to Audacity
  • Adding a second sound clip
  • Getting a sound track to repeat
  • Deleting part of a sound track
  • Adding silence before a sound track
  • Fading sounds in or out
  • Muting a sound track
  • Changing voice pitches on a sound track
  • Changing the volume of a sound track
  • Adding a blank audio track
  • Deleting a sound track
  • Zooming in and zooming out of a sound track
  • Exporting the audacity project as a .wav

You can look at this video, to see these techniques

compare your audio file, with the original you heard at the
start of the lesson. How close do they match?

-----------------------------------------------------------
LESSON 4

To understand what the terms Data validation and verification mean
To be able to create validation and verification rules for a database

Validation and verification are two ways to check that the data entered into a computer is correct. Data entered incorrectly is of little use.

Validation

Validation is an automatic computer check to ensure that the data entered is sensible and reasonable. It does not check the accuracy of data.
For example, a secondary school student is likely to be aged between 11 and 16. The computer can be programmed only to accept numbers between 11 and 16. This is arange check.
However, this does not guarantee that the number typed in is correct. For example, a student's age might be 14, but if 11 is entered it will be valid but incorrect.

Types of validation

There are a number of validation types that can be used to check the data that is being entered.

Validation typeHow it worksExample usage
Check digitthe last one or two digits in a code are used to check the other digits are correctbar code readers in supermarkets use check digits
Format checkchecks the data is in the right formata National Insurance number is in the form LL 99 99 99 L where L is any letter and 9 is any number
Length checkchecks the data isn't too short or too longa password which needs to be six letters long
Lookup tablelooks up acceptable values in a tablethere are only seven possible days of the week
Presence checkchecks that data has been entered into a fieldin most databases a key fieldcannot be left blank
Range checkchecks that a value falls within the specified rangenumber of hours worked must be less than 50 and more than 0
Spell checklooks up words in a dictionarywhen word processing

Verification

Verification is performed to ensure that the data entered exactly matches the original source.
There are two main methods of verification:
  1. Double entry - entering the data twice and comparing the two copies. This effectively doubles the workload, and as most people are paid by the hour, it costs more too.
  2. Proofreading data - this method involves someone checking the data entered against the original document. This is also time consuming and costly.

Now try a Test Bite.

Try to explain validation and verification to an adult

Lesson 1

  • A database is structured information
  • A database is made up of records
  • Records are made up of fields
  • To get information out of a database we use queries

      What is a database

      Use the autotrader site to
Find me a blue Honda jazz that is

      • Less than 12 years old

      • Within 50 mile of SO45 4RQ

      • Costing between £3500 and £4500
      •
      • Having done up to 45,000 mile

We are going to use a database to help
      Sherlock Holmes to solve crimes

Click to go to the Whodunnit Website

      Remember
                            >               is greater / bigger than
                            >=             is greater / bigger than or equals to
                            <               is less than
<=             is less than or equals to

Everyone should be able to do the practice case
Most people should be able to complete 5 cases
A few people may be able to do all 10 cases
